Venice High School
World Languages & Global Studies Magnet

Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish!

Our Mission is to bring the world to our students by teaching our students how to analyze and evaluate claims and data with the ultimate goal of promoting Acceptance, Equity, and Justice, so that someday, we may achieve World Peace. WLGS scholars partake in a rigorous A-G college preparatory curriculum all four years and prepare for a competitive post-secondary enrollment, all while engaging in a World Language of their choice and learning about the culture and history of where that language is spoken.

Our Vision is to see our students become Active Participants in the community. Students who listen to others respectfully, respectfully advocate for themselves, and who affect change based on an ethical, informed frame of mind- in both major roles like political office, and in every day acts, like saying "arigato", "ありがとう", "شكرًا لك","merci", "grazie" and "gracias."

Our Mission is to provide all students with the tools to succeed academically, socio-emotionally, college, and career-wise within a safe, supportive, and empowering learning environment.

All 9th graders will start with Geography/Ethnic Studies or AP Geography AB as the starting point in their global journey, a shared experience that will empower students as they learn about the world through different lenses. They will also start on their global communication journey by starting to learn one of our 5 World Language offerings together in smaller cohorts for the next four years. Their 11th or 12th grade year, all of our WLGS global scholars have the option of enrolling in AP Comparative Government/International Relations, which allow them to not only expand their knowledge of global world systems, but also to continue their college prep journey as they learn about the world around them. WLGS is a unique academic program nestled within one of Los Angeles' most diverse neighborhoods- and we are proud to say that our students graduate Venice High School as conscientious and well-rounded global citizens, ready for college and for life ahead, as our data shows.

*Please note that WLGS is a program for students with no prior experience in the language they will study, and that they will need to take 4 years of that language. Students cannot sample languages and take one year of each as this would not satisfy California Education Code requirements as well as LAUSD Graduation Requirements.

**The WLGS Magnet does not offer Mandarin as a course of study. The Mandarin program at Venice High School is part of the Dual Language Academy, which has its own requirements and application process. Students seeking a seat in the DLA Mandarin Program must have been enrolled for 8 years in an immersion program, or show the equivalent knowledge through testing.  Applications for this program are under the e-choices page, in the Multilingual/Multicultural section, and is not a magnet program.

***Students whose home language is Spanish may not select Spanish as their language of study. For students who want to improve their advanced knowledge of Spanish given their experience with it at home, we will work with the students to see if in their junior or senior year they can concurrently take their language of study class and AP Spanish Language. This is only an option for students who are on-track towards graduation. Students who undertake this challenge often also qualify for the Double Seal of Biliteracy, although this is not guaranteed.

Additional Requirements:

- All WLGS students will be enrolled in Geography/Ethnic Studies or AP Human Geography in 9th grade.
- All WLGS students will complete a Service Learning Project (graduation requirement) with a connection to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
-All WLGS students are responsible for completing HEALTH at an LACCD Community College, at our Venice Adult School, during LAUSD Summer School, or during Period 0 before school class which begins at 7:30am.
- All WLGS students must be able to identify and discuss a set of key terms related to global studies, including, but not limited to immigration/emigration/migration, diplomacy, human rights, government/private/public sectors, ethics, financial literacy, etc., and will work on a yearly portfolio that will aid them in the goal of a Senior Defense prior to graduation.
