We are now 15 weeks into the Fall semester and both of our magnets are full.  For those who were not able to get a spot in our magnets, please be aware that you remain on our waitlist, and that if seats become available, we will call on families again in the first two weeks of the Spring semester.  However, it is very important that you complete the e-choices on-time application between October 2nd and November 17th, to have the best chance at a seat in the 2024-2025 school year.

Are you interested in our Magnet Programs, start here.

It is my honor to represent two fantastic magnet programs available at Venice High School-- the Science, Technology, Engineering, Medical Math Magnet (STEMM - 1890707) and the World Languages & Global Studies Magnet (WLGS - 1890702)

Any student who wishes to attend one of our magnet programs must apply through
e-choices.lausd.net.  If Venice High School is your school of residence, you do not get automatic enrollment in these magnet programs and you must apply with the e-chocies application.

The on-time application period will run from October 2nd, 2023 through November 17th, 2023. Those who apply in that window will get a letter in December to check for errors, and must respond to stay in the process. Then in the Spring Semester, e-chocies will notify families if they have an invitation to one of our programs, or if they are on a wait list.  You must accept or decline by logging in to the e-choices portal by mid April.  Please check back for the exact date.

Families who do not complete the on-time application will be able to apply using the late application, but will not be offered acceptance until all the families who applied on time have a seat or decline their offer for a seat. So please, apply on time!

Please review the information about our two magnet programs on the links to the left, and follow the social media accounts on Instagram so that you can see our day to day and get updates.

To sign up for a tour of our campus, go to bit.ly/vhstourF23. Tours will be held on October 5th, October 18th, October 26th and November 16th.

I will be at Palms MS on Oct 3rd, Wright MS on Oct 10th, ICEF Vista on Oct 12th, John Burroughs on Oct 20th.
If you are not able to attend the High School Information Night at your middle school, or your school is not hosting such an event, please complete this Interest Survey and I will schedule a group zoom meeting where I can provide information about our programs, the e-choices application, and the enrollment process.

We offer 15 locations for pick up and drop off by school bus for our magnet students, and...
we are working out the details to add one or two more stops!

*****************************************************************************************
Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, Mr. Vicente moved to California as a five year old, and moved to LA at age 18 to attend UCLA. What a surprise it would be to him and his family that the child who left Oaxaca would make Oaxacalifornia, the largest community of Oaxacans living in California, his home.  Perhaps you have noticed the many businesses in Mar Vista which claim a connection to Oaxaca. This serrindipidous connection has provided Mr. Vicente with a familiarity of what it is like to grow up in a multicultural immigrant home, much like the experience that is quite familiar to many students at Venice High School.

Mr. Vicente began his career in education serving as an Behavioral Specialist Aid for students with Autism. He completed his student teaching working with first graders, worked 2 years as a substitute for the district, and then 15 years as a high school Spanish teacher, 14 of which were at Venice High School in the World Languages and Global Studies Magnet.

Now, in his 16th year with the district, Mr. Vicente considers it a great honor to serve as the Magnet Coordinator for both the World Languages and Global Studies Magnet, as well as the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine Magnet.

For the 30th anniversary of WLGS, which began at Venice High School in 1988 as the Foreign Language Magnet, Mr. Vicente interviewed all of the Magnet Coordinators who had held the office up to that point, from the founder of the FLM (Emilie Gino) and on, observing that each coordinator saw a need in supporting the students and came with a mission.

For his mission statement, Mr Vicente looks to the United Nation's Rights of the Children, 1989, with the desire to foster learning and healthy living by working to protect a child's dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity in a spirit of peace and acceptance.

As a teacher, Mr. Vicente sponsored or co-sponsored the following clubs over different years: Chatelaines & Esquires, CSF Delphians, The Gay Straight Alliance, Community Closet Club, Period, and the Spanish Club.

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Vicente enjoys traveling and embarks on a new vacation every summer, sometimes with students through EF Tours. With students, Mr. Vicente has travelled to Costa Rica, England, France, Italy, and Spain.  It is fun for Mr. Vicente to interact with the cultures of other countries and to find cultural artifacts to bring back into the classroom.  In Argentina, Mr. Vicente visited the Plaza de San Telmo and brought back some art pieces for the classroom from this flea market.  In the summer of 2015, Mr. Vicente took a road trip on the World’s Longest Yard Sale, driving from Alabama to Ohio, and picking up fun vintage items along the way.
