BILITERACY AWARDS

The Seal of Biliteracy refers to an award earned by students for showing competency in both English and an additional World Language.    At Venice High School, we offer an outstanding selection of language courses through our World Languages & Global Studies Magnet, our Dual Languages Academy, and our three SLCS. We offer Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish.

The California State Seal of Biliteracy is marked by a gold seal affixed to the diploma or transcript and recognizes high school graduates who have achieved a high level of proficiency in one or more language(s) in addition to English.

To determine a student's level of proficiency, we will use Avant Assessments, which are adaptive computerized exams, and in most cases, will need to complete the Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking sections.    Some languages will only test 3 or two sections.   Please consult with AvantAssessment.com for details.

Students who complete 4 years of coursework in a Language Other Than English, and who maintain a 3.0 LOTE GPA will only need to take the Oral Response section of the Avant Exam.

The California Department of Education has released an update to the Seal of Biliteracy Policy. This is a summary of how students may earn the Seal of Biliteracy, and a projected timeline for implementing this updated policy.

THE GLOBAL SEAL OF BILITERACY

The Global Seal of Biliteracy complements and supports the individual state Seals of Biliteracy. The organization is committed to expanding the opportunity to demonstrate and document one's bilingualism. The Global Seal of Biliteracy credential meets or exceeds the requirements of all existing U.S. state Seal programs, and offers a uniform standard to recognize language skills at levels that are meaningful for academic and workplace environments. It allows recipients to showcase their language skills to any school or employer across state lines and national borders. The Global Seal of Biliteracy is proof of your language proficiency at one of three fluency levels: Functional Fluency, Working Fluency, or Professional Fluency.
