Ms. Simon-Meyer's Counseling Page!
Welcome! I am Ms. Simon-Meyer, Lead Counselor and comprehensive school counselor for last names S-Z in Sports Med, Media & ALPS c/o 2029. My goal is to support students to become respectful, inclusive, inquisitive conscientious and exemplary citizens and community members.
I am originally from Wisconsin (Go Pack Go!) and moved to California after finishing my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Middle School Math at the University of Delaware. While working in an elementary school setting, I went back to school and earned my Master's Degree at Loyola Marymount University in School Counseling with a PPS Credential. I have been a part of the VHS community ever since.
I am most commonly heard saying that counseling could be a full year course for students and their parent/guardians. For this reason, I encourage you to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns so you are aware of all opportunities and supports available!
What is the best way to learn about opportunities?
- Look at your students Counseling Schoology Group for regular updates, opportunities & reminders.
- Check out the Counseling Newsletter (updated at each 10 & 20 week grading period)
- Visit the VHS website. Key webpages are Counseling, College Classes at VHS, Advanced Placement Courses, College Center, Student Resources, Athletics & ASB.
- Contact me directly
- Have you student visit me at nutrition or lunch (I am available every other day in my office and the days I am not in my office students can locate me at my supervision spot.
What can parents/guardians do to support their student at home?
- Monitor courses weekly in Schoology
- Review progress reports
- Contact your student's teacher immediately when you have a question/concern or if they request a meeting.
- Ensure you are getting emails, calls & texts from VHS.
- Let your counselor know if you feel your student could use support with their mental health, accessing academics, getting enrolled in enrichment opportunities, or anything else.
What can counselors do to support students?
Counselors are here to help improve student outcomes by managing, delivering and assessing the services we provide. We advocate for students and connect them to resources that are available to the community. This could mean,
- Providing intervention opportunities like tutoring, classroom lessons, or progress grade review and goal setting.
- Providing referrals to credit recovery/grade improvement, mental health services, or scholarships.
- Providing Enrichment opportunities through community college classes, internships, or volunteer and leadership experiences.
