Mr. Beckerman's Class (Mr. Beck)

I am the SAS/GATE Coordinator and Lead Teacher for the Sports Medicine Academy at Venice High School, where I teach AP World History, AP Human Geography, and Modern World History. In these roles, I have the opportunity to work not only with the students in my classroom, but also with teachers, families, and students across the Venice community.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Arts and Sciences with a major in Political Science, along with a Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies and a minor in Film. I later earned my Master’s degree in Education from the University of Southern California. I hold teaching credentials in Social Studies and English and have also earned a micro-credential in Social Emotional Learning (SEL).

My path to education has not been a traditional one. I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and immigrated to the United States as a child, learning English as my second language. That experience continues to shape the way I work with students, particularly those who are finding their place in a new school, culture, or academic environment.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the entertainment industry. That professional experience has influenced my approach to education and reinforced my belief that students learn best when they can connect what happens in the classroom to the larger world around them.

As a Social Studies teacher, my goal is not simply for students to memorize historical events or geographic concepts. I want students to develop the ability to think critically, evaluate evidence, ask meaningful questions, communicate their ideas effectively, and consider multiple perspectives. These are skills that matter not only in AP courses and college, but throughout life.

As Venice High School’s SAS/GATE Coordinator and Sports Medicine Academy Lead Teacher, I am also committed to expanding opportunities for students to challenge themselves academically while pursuing their individual interests. One of the great strengths of Venice is that students can combine rigorous academics with academies, athletics, the arts, clubs, leadership, and the many other experiences that make high school meaningful.

Above all, I believe students thrive when they are challenged, supported, and given opportunities to discover what they are capable of achieving.
