Welcome! I am Mrs. Vivar, the World Languages and Global Studies Magnet Counselor. My focus is to get your child to graduation and beyond, all while helping them learn how to be a respectful and responsible global citizen who is college, career, and life ready. Upon high school graduation and in their journey there, students are expected to learn and understand how to respectfully advocate for themselves in person and digitally for their educational needs, are fully aware and informed of their educational status towards meeting graduation requirements, and our hope is that parents be advised that educators are here to partner with them in the best educational interests of their child. Students are best served when they take ownership of their education and educational/life goals, especially in the formative years of high school. In WLGS, our goal is for our students to be respectful global citizens who care about and empathize with their world, and thus, they demonstrate this in the character that they carry as young individuals ready for society and who contribute positively to their school community.

 

A little about me- I am a Venice native, born and raised. My family is from El Salvador, and all 5 of my siblings and I are Venice High School alumni. I attended UC Santa Barbara, where I obtained my BA in Sociology and minored in History. I then attended Loyola Marymount University, where I obtained my MA in Counseling as well as my Pupil Personnel Services credential in School Counseling. I have worked in public schools, both charter and traditional, for 20 years. I am a mother to 4 boys. This school year will be my 9th year at Venice High School.

 

I invite you to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns regarding your child's educational goals and aspirations. I also would like to express my sentiment in working collaboratively with stakeholders- in pursuit of the mission of each students' future, the practice of student self-advocacy, and that of upholding the reputation of public education as a whole. I also have many resources and helpful links attached to this webpage that will assist in your student's success this school year.

My office doors are open during Nutrition & Lunch, with the exception of when Counselors are doing campus supervision. I will post the days/times/location of campus supervision outside of the Magnet Office, for the reference of all. If I am not in my office, please fill out the BLUE "Request to See Counselor" form, and leave in my mailbox tray, which is located on the Magnet Office counter. I will then summons you from one of your class periods. 

 

As is standard procedure for any other business office, please make an appointment ahead of time for your convenience. I can also be reached via email, Schoology message, or phone call. You may also fill out the PINK "Parent Appointment Request" and leave in my mailbox tray, which is located on the Magnet Office counter.

Venice High School World Languages and Global Studies Magnet students will obtain a high school diploma and will also graduate academically and socio-emotionally ready to attend an institution of higher education/learning post high school.

 

The World Languages and Global Studies Magnet Counseling Program will provide all students with the tools to succeed academically, socio-emotionally, college, and career-wise within a safe, supportive, and empowering learning environment.

 

To receive a high school diploma in LAUSD, students must satisfy:

• Minimum “A-G” course requirements earning a “D” or better (Universities only look at “C” or better!)
• CDE graduation requirements
• Additional LAUSD graduation requirements

• ADV PE (or sports team)- 2 years
• Health- 1 semester
• Ethnic Studies- 1 semester
• Service Learning Requirement
• Career Pathway
• 40 Hours of Community Service at a NON-PROFIT organization
