Parent & Family Engagement Policy – 2022

 

Venice High School agrees to:

• Jointly develop with parents of students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and distribute to all school parents a School Parental Involvement Policy agreed upon by the school and parents in the school wide program.
• Notify parents of the School Parental Involvement Policy in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, distribute the policy to parents in a language that the parents can understand.
• Make the School Parental Involvement Policy available to the local community.
• Periodically update the School Parental Involvement Policy to meet the changing needs of parents and the school.
• Adopt the school’s school-parent compact as a component of its School Parental Involvement Policy.
• Be governed by the following statutory definition of parental involvement and carry out programs, activities and procedures in accordance with this definition:

Parental involvement means the participation of parent in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring:

• that parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning;
• that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school;
• that parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child;
• the carrying out of other activities, such as those described in the section 1118 of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (“ESEA”).

1. Venice High School will take the following actions to jointly involve parents in the development and finalization of its School Parental Involvement Policy and its school-wide plan, if applicable, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way under ESEA section 1118(b).:

The Title I Coordinator and/or an Administrative Designee will gather and disseminate to parents the following materials to involve and assist them in updating policies, understanding their rights, and pursuing any concerns they may have regarding the following:

• District-wide Parental Involvement Policy
• Venice High School’s Parental Involvement Policy
• Venice High School’s School-Parent-Student Compact
• Parent/Community Notices

1. Venice High School will provide to parents, a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet through, among other things, the following actions:

1. Venice High School will provide parents, with opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and will respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicable, including the following:

If any parent comments indicate dissatisfaction with the school wide plan under ESEA section (1114)(b)(2) Venice High School will submit those parent comments to the district

In order to ensure effective parent involvement and to support a partnership among the school, parents, and the community, and to improve student academic achievement, Venice High School will build the school’s and parent’s capacity for strong parental involvement, among other things, through the following activities:            
•  Parent Workshops
• Family Literacy Workshops/Orientations
• Parent Trainings
2.  The School-Parent-Student Compact, which has been jointly developed with parents, outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. It describes specific ways the school and families will partner to help children achieve the State’s high academic standards. It addresses the following legally required items, as well as other items suggested by parents of Title I students.

The school will incorporate the School-Parent Compact as a component of its School Parental Involvement Policy by the following actions:

• Have printed multilingual material available for distribution at the Parent Center
• Hand out School-Parent Compact at various parent meetings

1. The School will, with the assistance of the district, provide assistance to parents in understanding such topics as the following,—
• The State’s academic content standards
• The State’s student academic achievement standards
• The State and local academic assessments including alternate assessments
• The requirements of Title I
• How to monitor their child’s progress
• How to work with educators
• COBA Conference, State Title I, various parent workshops and trainings
2. The school will, with the assistance of the district, provide technology, literacy training, the items described below, and other materials and training to foster parental involvement and help parents improve their children’s academic achievement:
• Parent Workshops
• Family Literacy Workshops/Orientations
• Parent Trainings
3. In order to build ties with parents the school will, with the assistance of parents and the district, educate its teachers, pupil services personnel, principals and other staff to reach out to, communicate and collaborate with parents as equal partners. Parent involvement in school values and programs will be advanced by, among other things:
• Hosting an Open House at the Parent Center once a year where teachers and parents can meet and partner together in improving student achievement
• Hosting a Back-to-School Night twice a year
• Hosting Parent Conference Night twice a year
• Monthly Principal’s Newsletters and Coffee with the Principal, to inform parents of school news/activities

The school will, to the extent feasible and appropriate, take the following actions to ensure that information related to the school and parent-programs, meetings, and other activities, is sent to parents in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request, and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand:

• Make phone calls through automated phone dialer for various meetings

Venice High School provides opportunities for the participation of all Title I parents, including parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory students. Information and school reports are provided in a format and language that parents understand by:

• Providing school documents in a language that parents can understand
• Providing translation and interpretation in a language that parents can understand
• Wheelchair ramps and ADA compliant restrooms
• Connecting migrant parents with various District provided services for their children.

This School Parental Involvement Policy has been jointly developed and agreed upon by the school and parents, as evidenced by minutes of the School Site Council and Title I Meetings.

 

This policy was adopted by Venice High School on January 21, 2020 and will be in effect until an updated version is approved. The school will distribute this policy to all parents and it will be made available to the local community.
